5 Travel Tips & Body Hacks

Get out your passport and turn on your out-of-office reply. Summer is in full swing, and it’s time for a well-deserved vacation. But whether you’re taking a quick plane ride to Miami or a full 24-hour flight to Australia, travel isn’t always great for your immune system. We’ve put together some tips to keep you healthy and energized during your trip (and make the most of your PTO).

Airplane cabins tend to have very low humidity levels (just 10 to 20 percent), which can quickly lead to dehydration. We’re talking dry skin, itchy eyes, fatigue — sometimes even more serious problems if you have a breathing condition such as asthma. Plus, a dry environment is the perfect place for flu and cold viruses to enter your body without a fight.

Nobody has time for that. Here’s how to fight back:

  1. Drink water. Stay hydrated before, during and after your flight by drinking plenty of fluids.
  2. Avoid coffee and alcohol. We know, we know. But trust us. Coffee and alcohol are both diuretics (meaning they remove water from the body). Plus, alcohol can suppress your immune system. Try to stay away from these on the days you’re flying.
  3. Moisturize. Before your flight, make sure you’ve properly moisturized. This will help nourish your skin and keep you looking fresh. Keep a travel-sized bottle in your carry-on luggage in case of a dry skin emergency.
  4. Use a nasal spray. A simple saline solution can do wonders. Spray once or twice during your flight to keep your nose from getting dry.
  5. Bring antibacterial wipes. As soon as you sit down, wipe down any surfaces you may come into contact with. Germs could be hiding on armrests, tray tables or seat belt clips (yuck!).
