The Damage Heat Does To Hair-

Healthy hair is something we al strive for. Sadly, if you like to style your hair with heat, you know all about heat damage. While using heat is the number one choice for a lot of people, it can have some very big negative benefits in the long run. It’s not a hard thing to notice when your hair isn’t as healthy as you want it to be but for a lot of people they don’t understand what got them in there in the first place. That’s why we’re here to help.

Our hair is a lot more complex then we think. It is made up of three layers and all of them play a part in how your hair looks overall.

  • The outer layer is called the cuticle. They are made of overlapping cells and are supposed to lay flat. They remain flexible to give shine to the hair and protect the inner layers from damage. When you notice your hair getting frizzy, that’s because the cuticle is raised.
  • The middle layer is called cortex and is known as the thickest layer. This is where the melanin and keratin proteins of the hair are stored. Basically where your color and shape comes from. The keratin proteins provide strength to the hair and help it retain all of its moisture.
  • The third layer is the medulla. This is the innermost layer, which provides some extra strength. The one thing about it is that it’s not always present, especially in lighter hair colors.

Let’s talk about how heat causes damaged hair in the first place. When your hair is exposed to heat it changes the shape of its keratin strands according to Dyson. When that keratin is melted, your hair will keep the shape on a molecular level and you can’t reverse it. Not only do you alter the keratin production but you also alter the hydrogen bonds in the hair.

When you break these bonds it’ll temporarily change your hairs shape. That is how curly hair comes back to normal after you add moisture. Our hair can withstand a good amount of heat before it gets damaged and that is why it’s important to minimize the amount of heat you put on your hair. Not only that but make sure that you’re taking care of it properly, especially if you’re putting heat on it.

Now let’s just say that your hair is already heat damaged. What can you do? The answer is no that simple. Since you can’t undo heat-damaged hair, you have to give off the impression that it’s as healthy as can be. One of the first steps is to moisturize! A lot of the time when our hair has heat damage it needs moisture so make sure you put oils and conditioners in it. Another very important thing is to leave your hair alone!

Make sure that you aren’t putting heat on it for a while. This isn’t going to help the situation. Apart from that, go to your hairstylist and get trims every couple of months. This will get rid of the dry damaged ends and give room for your hair to grow back!

At the IV Lounge we have a great way to make sure your hair gets that extra strength form the inside! We like to call it our Beauty Cocktail! It contains biotin, which is a great source to make sure our hair, skin, and nails stay strong. Just give us a call so that we can schedule your appointment today! Don’t miss out!
